A one bedroom cabin can consume 2 to 3 times the energy of that of a 2 or 3 bedroom home. Each cabin produces 3 to 4 times the waste of a 1 family home. As to the recycling aspect, never happens. Then you add in the fuel cost of the guest’s vehicles, the littering they do, or the wildfires caused by their negligence. Not to mention the increase of accidents due to not paying attention and the resulting personal property damage levied on the locals. The local wildlife is also taking a big hit with an increase of road kill and poisoned animals.
Another thing that gets swept under the rug that hurts people and the environment where ever there are cabins is how the crime rate skyrockets. In once quiet, peaceful areas, criminals (especially those from out of town) are attracted to the cabins and their fancy furnishings. This effects neighboring homes that get robbed as well. You have the materials wasted to repair and replace stolen cabin articles, plus the added work load and safety hazards to our local law enforcements who are over stressed as it is. Factor in the added fuel costs to the police and you have a lot of wasted time and energy that could be better spent.
If you look at pictures of Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg from 50 to 100 years ago and compare them to what those places look like today it makes you almost want to cry to see what the rich and the tourists have done.
If anyone can stop at least one more cabin from being built, or stopping 1 more person from renting a cabin, it would be a step toward fixing the problems.
